The Gold Camp Players presents 'A Bad Year for Tomatoes' adult comedy LEAD, SD - Beaver Haven, Vermont and its many nosy neighbors are the setting for the latest Gold Camp Players (GCP) community theatre adult comedy play A Bad Year for Tomatoes at the Historic Homestake Opera House (HHOH) located at 313 West Main Street in Lead. A Bad Year for Tomatoes deals with the hilarious misfortunes of a famous television actress who seeks to "get away from it all" in a small New England town and raise tomatoes – but even that doesn’t work out so well in Beaver Haven. The play is written by John Patrick, winner of a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for his drama, The Teahouse of the August Moon. The comedy is rated PG-13 with adult language and takes the stage November 11-13, and 18-20 with Friday and Saturday showtimes at 7:00 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm. It’s 1973. Fed up with the pressures and demands of her acting career, the famous Myra Marlowe (Elizabeth “Layne” Hughes) leases a house in tiny Beaver Haven and settles down to write her autobiography. She is successful in turning aside the offers pressed on her by her relentless Hollywood agent Tom Lamont (Ronald Peterson) but dealing with her nosy, omnipresent neighbors – such as Piney, an axe-wielding woodsman (Phelan Scherer) – is a different matter. In an attempt to shoo them away, and gain some privacy, Myra invents a mad, homicidal sister – who is kept locked in an upstairs room who occasionally escapes long enough to scare off uninvited visitors. The ruse works well at first but complications result when the local handyman develops an affection for "Sister Sadie" and some of the more officious ladies (Sarah Canida as Cora Gump, Carla Blomberg as Reba Harper, and Sherry Bea Smith as Willa Mae Wilcox) decide it is their Christian duty to save the poor demented Sadie's soul. In desperation Myra announces that her imaginary sibling has suddenly gone off to Boston—which brings on the sheriff (Joel Edgar) and the suspicion of murder. Needless to say, all is straightened out in the end, but the uproarious doings will keep audiences laughing right up to the final curtain. A Bad Year for Tomatoes is generously sponsored by First National Bank in Lead. The performance is dedicated to Gold Camp Players actress and friend Lee Ann Paananen of Lead. Producer of the play is Rose Speirs, assisted by Matt Pike, and Chelsie Bauer. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for HHOH members, $5 students (with college/high school ID) and children. Reservations are not required; seating is open seating (first-come, first served.) To purchase tickets by credit card, call the HHOH office at 605-584-2067 or purchase online at HomestakeOperaHouse.org or purchase at the door. The ticket booth opens one hour prior to showtime.
