SAAM Survivor series: There's No Prid...
Description
Join us for the first of our Sexual Assault Awareness Month virtual events!
Dr Michael Belmonte will join us to discuss his experiences as a survivor of sexual assault and how he uses trauma-informed approaches in his work as an OB-GYN.
Dr. Michael Belmonte was a college student when he was sexually assaulted. Now, as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist, he cares for many patients who have had similar experiences. He uses his story to empower others to accept their survivor status and helps healthcare trainees
to learn how to provide trauma-informed care.
to learn how to provide trauma-informed care.
He completed a Bachelor of Science in Human Communication Sciences & Disorders and Psychology at Northwestern University and received his Medical Degree from the University of
Illinois at Chicago. Through his work, he has developed an elective course entitled Empowering Clinicians-in-Training to Address Domestic Violence, which gives medical students additional preparation in screening, treating, and caring for patients experiencing Intimate Partner Violence, which unfortunately gets little attention in medical education.
His research and clinical interests lie in working towards increasing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for underrepresented minorities in medicine so that the physician workforce can
mirror the communities it serves.
