Homestake Opera House to host University of Nebraska Omaha Jazz Clinic and Concert LEAD, SD The Historic Homestake Opera House is proud to host Dr. Peter Madsen, Professor and Coordinator of Jazz Studies of the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) with six of his university jazz students for a jazz ensemble clinic and concert on Friday, April 1, 2016. The hour-long jazz ensemble clinics begins at 1:00 pm with a improvisation clinic at 4:00 pm on the stage. The evening concert featuring clinic participants and UNO students and faculty begins at 7:00 pm in the theater at the Historic Homestake Opera House at 313 W. Main Street in Lead. The clinics and concert also features selected high school and middle school students from Lead-Deadwood, and Spearfish. The students at UNO have performed with the Omaha Symphony, Opera Omaha, Omaha Performing Arts, and the Omaha Community Playhouse. The UNO international touring program has linked students visiting Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Lithuania, and Mexico, among others. Dr. Madsen has performed extensively in jazz, pop, and classical venues, having played with Bill Watrous, Pete Christlieb, Aretha Franklin, Frank Valli, the Jim Widner Big Band, the Omaha Big Band, the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, the Omaha Jazz Orchestra, the Illinois Symphony, the Omaha Symphony, the Omaha Brass Ensemble, and the Missouri Symphony Society. Madsen?s duties at UNO include directing the jazz ensembles and jazz combos, coordinating the UNO Brass Day, the UNO Great Plains Jazz Festival, and the UNO Jazz Camp and teaching applied low brass, jazz survey, low brass ensemble, and improvisation. Madsen received a bachelor of science degree in music education from the University of Missouri, a master of music degree from Northern Illinois University, and a doctor of musical arts degree in trombone performance from the University of Illinois. Dr. Madsen is also in high demand as a guest artist/clinician and has performed and/or adjudicated throughout the United States and in Europe, Japan, and Brazil. As a member of the Continental Trombone Quartet, Dr. Madsen has performed and presented clinics at the Eastern Trombone Workshop, the Midwest Clinic, and the International Association for Jazz Education International Conference. The Continental Trombone Quartet has also performed in Spain, Mexico, Brazil, China, and Canada. Dr. Madsen is currently serving as Chair of College/University Affairs for the Nebraska Music Educators Association and is a Getzen Artist/Clinician. Daytime clinics occur at 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Registration is $15 per person; music students may participate in the clinics and concert at no cost. Call to reserve chairs by March 31. The ticket booth opens one hour prior to showtime. Wine, beer, soda, and water is available for purchase. Free parking is available in the back of the building, and also free off-street and lot parking within 2 blocks of the theater. The building is wheelchair accessible.
