Description
This presentation will use visual images to investigate the idea of a contemporary Counter-Reformation. Like the Counter-Reformation initiated by the Catholic church to guard against the perceived heresy of Protestantism, so the cultural conservatism of the 1950’s, when challenged by the explorations of the 1960’s, created a conservative backlash that is still with us today. Examples of this phenomenon will range from Lassie, Barbie and Willem de Kooning to Hello Kitty, Mike Kelly and Furry Conventions.
