A musical comedy for all ages, with a live band!
The 100-year-old Homestake Opera House will be busy with a musical comedy weeknights in July 2015. The Black Hills-themed musical comedy Deadeye's Wild West, or Hoodwinked at the Homestake opens Monday, July 6, 2015, and continues its run every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m., through July 30, 2015 at the theater on 313 W. Main Street.
The musical comedy has been described as "a story ripped from the pages of dubious Black Hills history." The show won a loyal following in 2014 during Black Hills performances, and the same cast and live on-stage band return in 2015 under the direction of Jon Steven Wiley.
"There's something here that draws people back again and again," says Wiley. "The show has bigger-than-life characters, fast-paced comedy, and original music that brings audiences to their feet."
The music is by Black Hills composer and performer Scott Simpson, who has added an additional song to the score this year. "It's sure to amaze," said Wiley of the new number. Simpson doubles as the leader of the onstage musicians. Paul Higbee, best-known as longtime feature writer and columnist for South Dakota Magazine, created the script.
Randy Bender, an actor who has performed worldwide, again steps into the big boots of Deadeye Dan, owner of a traveling wild west show. Sarah Carlson and Janet Higbee, versatile performers well known to Black Hills audiences, play Badlands Bessie and Ma. These two tough-as-nails women cast wary eyes at Dan as he launches a show-biz scheme involving young Rosie, played by Hannah Lessly. She earned the distinction of singing at Carnegie Hall this past winter.
The entire musical is set in Lead in 1914, and audiences will recognize many local references. In addition, a historic photography presentation will be featured prior to showtime from Historic Black Hills Studios, home of the Fassbender Collection.
Admission is $12 adults and $6 for kids. Tickets are currently available in person at the HHOH office at the back entrance 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, Monday-Friday; or at the door. The ticket booth opens one hour prior to showtime.
Funding for Deadeye?s Wild West is provided in part by Black Hills & Badlands Tourism Association; the Black Hills Pioneer; Deadwood History, Inc.; and KEVN Black Hills Fox TV.
