The Gold Camp Players community theatre group proudly presents The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas on the first two weekends of May 2015 on the stage of the Homestake Opera House at 313 W. Main Street in Lead.
The musical is written by Larry L. King and Peter Masterson, with music and lyrics by Carol Hall, in cooperation with Samuel French. The musical director is Shelley Dragoo and stage director is David Scherer.
?The Gold Camp Players have a reputation of welcoming anyone who would like to experience community theatre, and this production is no exception,? says Dave Scherer, production director. ?Our cast of thirty includes individuals from Lead, Deadwood, Spearfish, and Rapid City. Half of the performers are between the ages of 16 and 22, most have never been on the stage at the Historic Homestake Opera House before, and six are making their theatrical debut. This musical is bursting with talent.?
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas is an energetic musical that tells the true story of the high-profile closing down of a 130-year-old brothel outside a small town in Texas in 1973. This happy-go-lucky view of small town vice and statewide political side-stepping recounts the good times and the demise of the Chicken Ranch, known since the 1850s as one of the better pleasure palaces in all of Texas. Governors, senators, mayors, and even victorious college football teams frequent Miss Mona's cozy bordello until a puritan nemesis focuses his television cameras and his righteous indignation on the institution. The musical portrays how putting life on TV changes it, how it changes people, how the TV camera impacts that which it records. The show asks questions about privacy and, ultimately, asks if television goes too far in its love for exposés.
Performances are May 1-3, and 8-10, 2015. Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday matinee shows start at 2:00 p.m.
