SUMMARY:National Players Touring Company brings "Hamlet" to the Matthews stage
DESCRIPTION:All the world's a stage in Shakespeare's classic revenge tragedy about a powerful family embroiled in corruption\, sexual scandals\, questionable deaths\, and political cover-ups. "Hamlet" is performed by the National Players at 7:30 p.m.\, Wednesday\, April 5. This is the fourth Subscription Series event of 2016-17. Individual tickets are for sale for $25 adults\, $10 youth and BHSU students. Tickets are available at the Matthews' art gallery during business hours\, Tuesday-Saturday\, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\, or by phone at 605-642-7973. Buy tickets online anytime at www.matthewsopera.com.\n \n\nThe most famous of William Shakespeare's plays\, "Hamlet\," has been labeled the most perfect revenge tragedy ever written. A "revenge tragedy" is defined as a drama in which the dominant motive of the main character is revenge for a real or imagined injury carried throughout the entire story. While the quest for revenge can simultaneously be a quest for order and balance\, tragic events disrupt the existing order and balance from the moment that Hamlet's father appears to him in his ghostly form\, chaos is inevitable.\n \n\n"Shakespeare's plays are the foundation of English theater. They are timeless. We are excited to present one of the premiere Shakespeare traveling troupes to our audience for the second time in two years\," remarks Sian Young\, The Matthews executive director. She continues\, "If our patrons remember\, in 2015\, the National Players presented the Shakespeare comedy\, "As You Like It." \n \n\n"In addition to the performance at the opera house\, this group will put on school and community residencies that are free to all participants. They will occur for our public schools\, Canyon Hills Center\, various community theater groups\, and the general public. In particular\, it is so important for our youth to have the opportunity to learn about Shakespeare in a workshop setting. It leads to greater understanding of the language and emotion that is conveyed in these plays\," continues Young. "Thank you to the Spearfish Foundation for Public Education for supporting the school residencies."\n \n\nCelebrating its 68th season\, National Players is a unique ensemble bringing innovative theater to communities large and small across the United States. Founded in 1949\, National Players stimulates youthful imagination and critical thinking by presenting classic plays in contemporary and accessible ways. \n \n\nNational Players is a program of Olney Theatre Center and is made possible by support from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County\, the Maryland State Department of Education\, and the Maryland State Arts Council.
