SUMMARY:Life is a Ceremony Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Deadwood History will host a workshop entitled Life is a Ceremony at the Days of '76 Museum on Saturday\, April 22\, 2017\, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The workshop is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Advance reservations requested. Call 605-722-4800 or purchase tickets online at DeadwoodHistory.com. \n\nJohn Beheler\, South Dakota Humanities Council Speakers' Bureau Scholar\, will expand on his topic Mitakuye Oyasin and delve into the ceremonial way of life of the Dakota and Lakota people. He examines what America was like before Columbus\, where the first peoples came from\, what lessons can be learned from our ancestors\, and how it is possible we are all related. Beheler offers an Indigenous perspective about culture\, spirituality\, and the origins of the Dakota and Lakota people. Refreshments will be served.\n\n \n\nJohn Beheler is an enrolled member of the Yankton Sioux Tribe. He currently lives in Ft. Thompson and serves as principal of Crow Creek High School. He is also executive director for the Dakota Indian Foundation\, a non-profit organization that provides scholarships and grants to Native American students. Mahed Wayanka (Sees Within) is the Dakota name his grandmother gave him following a vision he received on Bear Butte over 25 years ago. The name also pertains to his appreciation for traditional art\, song\, and dance. Beheler is the illustrator of the bestselling book\, Mitakuye Oyasin We Are All Related by Dr. A.C. Ross. \n\nThe workshop is co-sponsored by the Deadwood Historic Preservation Commission\, Deadwood History\, Adams-Mastrovich Family Foundation\, Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital & Medical Clinic\, and the South Dakota Humanities Council\, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
